Fanlistings Site Gone

After some thought, I decided to go ahead and get rid of the fanlistings site. It’s the end of an era here at WMW.org, but perhaps that era has been ended for a long time before now anyway.

For now, I’m not sure what I’ll replace the fanlistings site with, if anything; to be honest, my Tumblr and Pinterest accounts pretty much cover all that my fanlistings ever did (and more besides). Perhaps the fanlistings page idea can be resurrected in a new form…I just haven’t figured out quite what it will be yet. What have my fellow webdesigners come up with in the wake of fanlistings?

Debating Getting Out of Fanlistings

As I’ve started to putter around fixing up my fanlistings page, I’ve found that almost half of my links are broken, and of those broken fanlistings, many have been simply shut down and not restarted elsewhere. It’s going to be a lot of work to revamp it all, which has made me question the value of keeping a joined fanlistings page in the first place.

I never really got into fanlistings much, not like many of my compatriots in webdesign–I pretty much just hopped on the bandwagon because everyone else did. I don’t host any of my own anymore, and haven’t for years; my fanlistings page is a glorified page of links which I have to keep policing and relinking. But in a way I hate the thought of going through and removing my memberships from all those various sites, and I kinda like having a place to display my favorite things… I just don’t know if I want my list of favorite things to be completely dependent on other webdesigners’ choices to keep their sites alive or not.

I’m going to give this more thought…what do you think?

Puttering Around WithinMyWorld.org

Got most of the little fixes complete around the site–still have to work out the odd spacing issue on the webdesign tutorials mini-site, but everything else looks shipshape and Bristol fashion. 😛

Well, except that I forgot to write up version 13’s inspiration paragraph, and I accidentally broke one of the affiliate links… ;_; Okay, okay, I’m continuing to putter around fixing stuff. xD

Let me know what you think about all the various layouts–I did a whole slew of them, for the main domain, the webmistress page, and the Surviving College article series, as well as the webdesign tutorials, as I mentioned above, the links page, the network page, and even the joined fanlistings page. I challenged myself, in each of these layouts, to use colors that don’t usually get used together, and use icon navigation instead of text links. How’d I do? Let me know in the comments!

Version 13 is LIVE!

At LAST! It is uploaded and stuff is (mostly) done!

I don’t promise that absolutely everything works or looks the way it was supposed to–I find myself suddenly on a time crunch, mainly because CSS and HTML decided to go without their Midol today. *shakes fist at stupid code that took an hour to debug*

But I got mostly everything uploaded, and will continue to debug over the next couple of days. (Tell me, why is it that code can look absolutely PERFECT on my home computer, yet look like a piece of used toilet paper when I upload it? SIGH.)

Things that need to be fixed:
– the RSS page, because I kinda forgot about styling it
– new webmaster pic on contact page
– new link button on Affiliate page to reflect new layout
– Layout page, because the script that runs it appears to be broken
– writeup of Version 12 (which was just taken down)
– fanlisting page needs an intro
– one webdesign tuts page has some spacing issues

As you can see, there’s a lot to do yet, but it’s mostly small stuff. The big stuff–namely, the layouts and new content–is all up for your perusal! Enjoy the new look(s)–because there are multiples!

FL Updates, and More Work Behind the Scenes

I updated a couple of moved/closed fanlistings over at Captivations, and I plan to do a thorough review of all the FL links on there right before v13 goes live as well. Just want to make sure I’m linking to the right stuff! 😀

Also, I’m still working like a fiend behind the scenes of WMW.org here. I just finished a complete revamp of the Webmistress page last night, and I’m planning the same kind of revamp for the College Knowledge section as well, because I’m not really satisfied with the page layout in that section right now–it feels kinda cramped.

All that remains to be done, after the College Knowledge revamp, is to debug all the layouts (WMW.org itself, FL page, news blog, network, links), make sure they run in all the main browser types, and then–joy of joys!–v13 will be uploaded! *happy squee dance* 😀 Now here’s hoping I can actually DO this before June ends. LOL

Hard at Work on v13

After a 10-month wait, I’ve finally been able to move ahead with backend code and frontend design for WMW.org, as well as the look for the update blog. Now I just have to finish coding the fanlistings page and come up with design and code for the links page…LOL

Really enjoying getting back into web design. I didn’t realize how stifled I felt until I got a hard drive I could actually keep saving and re-saving to without fear of losing data. 😀 (But I’ll never let a hard drive failure catch me off-guard again–I’ve got a big external hard drive and 3 flash drives as backups now.)

Anyhow, keep your browsers tuned to WMW.org in the next month or so–v13 will be a big (and cool) change when it comes!

Added Joined FL Link and Sitemap Link; Also, New Link Exchange!

Updated the front page of my site with a conspicuous link to my joined FLs and my sitemap, so it’s easier to browse around. 🙂

Not many more updates to speak of today, because I’ve had some life-splitting headaches the past two days and am scheduled for a CT scan tomorrow afternoon. I hope this one will finally help us figure out what’s wrong with my head. (Well, besides the obvious :P)

Oh, and WMW.org has a new link-exchange: rigelatin.net! Wave hi 🙂 I am glad, since my .net section was looking rather bereft (one of my oldest .net link exchanges closed a few weeks back). Go and enjoy the awesome artwork Rosangela does on her sites!

MASSIVE Fanlist Update

Um, yeah. Captivations, my fanlisting collective, has about 14 katrillionzillion new joined fanlistings on it. My EYEEEEEEEEZZZZZ, they are bloodshot from all the CODINGGGGGGGGgggggggggguh.

I’m still not happy with how some of the fanlisting categories are displaying, but as it’s nearly 12:30 AM and I have been awake since 7:50 this morning, I am putting myself into much-needed Sleep Mode. Just thought I’d update again ^_^

Fanlist Cleanup, Part 1 and Links List Cleanup

Today, while hiding from the scary retail world of Black Friday, I went through all my joined fanlistings and noted the dead or moved ones. I also found about 10,000 more that I want to join on TFL.org. X_x Oh well, that’s what FLs are for–feeding our site-joining addiction. XD

Anyhow, now that I’ve noted all this stuff, I’m going to spend some time (maybe now, maybe later) getting rid of the dead links and putting up new links. Lot of work, but I think it’ll be worth it, since I hadn’t done jack squat with the joined FLs list in…um… *checks last date* Geez. Okay. Yeah. XD

ALSO: I did EVEN MORE fixing on the Links list. A little golden star icon was added to several sites’ descriptions, designating each as a “Robin-Recommended” site. Check those out, as well as some of the other new sites I added to the list!
